What is MBBS degree?

What is M.B.B.S ?

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, or in Latin Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae (abbreviated in various ways, viz. "BMBS", MB BChirBM BChMB BChMB ChBMB BSBMBMedMBBS etc.), are the two first professional degrees awarded upon graduation from medical school in medicine and surgery by universities in various countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom. The naming suggests that they are two separate degrees; however, in practice, they are usually treated as one and awarded together. Usually, students who have graduated with a "Bachelor of Medicine" degree may also practice surgery, because it is equivalent to the "Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery" degree. - wikipedia

About MBBS in KSHEMA

There are two phases. Phase 1 consist of two terms of six month roughly and the batches are called as 1st term-er and 2nd term-er. 1st and 2nd term students are in first year. When they finished first year, those who passed will  be enrolled in second year. Those who didn't will be separated in Odd batch and seat for the same paper within 6 month. However it is not the same for my immediate juniors as they are under NITTE. To be honest,I don't really know the details.

Next,we have second phase which consist of five terms. 3rd,4th and 5th terms are in second year. Third year consist of 6th and 7th terms. Final year consist of 8th and 9th term. After that,we have 1 year of internship training.

1st year - In First year, we had 9 to 10 am theory classes and 10 to 1 pm anatomy practicals in Dissection Hall followed by 2-4 pm evening practicals.

  • Physiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Anatomy

2nd year - Soon after we finished our end year first year holidays, we started our class as usual. But the class begins as early as 8 am till 10 am.  At 10.30 am we attended classes and postings in the hospital which is 5 minute journey with the bus provided. The postings are soo, heh, you have to read the blog if you wanna know. The postings end formally at 1pm.
  • Pathology
  • Microbiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Forensic Medicine

3rd year - Without end year vacation, we started our classes right after second year exam. Like we finished our practicals in Thursday but begins 3rd year that Saturday. How...pffftt...Okay, back to track. Like usual, classes commence at 8 till 10 am. Postings begins at 10.30 am till noon. Evening we had opthal or ENT classes again. Its actually seminar aka listening to our fellow batchmates presenting their assigned topics in front of the lecture hall.

  • Opthalmology
  • Ortholaryngology
  • Comunity Medicine

Final year- I certainly do not want to rush things up. So, till i get to next level, i wont say anything until i experienced it myself. Actually all postings for final year had commence from 5th term. For undergraduates we just need to take history and do physical examinations of the patients.Among 100 student per batch, we were divided in several units. The number of students in per unit  can vary from 6 student up to 16 students depending on which department they were posted. For 3rt and 4th terms we are needed to master the art of taking history. When we are good enough, they taught us about inspections, percussions, palpation and neurological examination of the patient beginning in 5th term. By 7th and 8th terms, Doctors expect all students had already master the art of taking history and examining the patients.

  • Medicine (Skin, Psychiatry,Neurology, Radiology)
  • Surgery ( with Orthopedics )
  • Obstetric and Gynecology
  • Pediatrics

Postings - Postings are basically classes which are conducted in hospitals. Each department have different style of teaching and way of handling students. If you are lucky enough, you'll get a very decent Doctor. PGs don't take classes, if  unless were told by respective Head of departments (HOD).For 3rd 4th term-er , they will have postings around 1 month or so only for medicine, surgery, and OBG. Starting from 5th term, they will complete other postings for about 4 weeks in major departments and two weeks for minor department.

End posting - It is a term used to signify that the posting will soon come to an end. At the very last day , each department will conduct end postings for students. It can either be viva(verbal examination) or written(so far,so rare) form. At the end of each posting, students are required to send their record book with completed case history.
